Has anyone actually grown garlic?
I’m having another go at growing it. I tried a few years ago – prepared the ground by digging in my own organic compost; bought the right type of garlic bulbs from a garden centre; waited patiently until the shortest day to plant out; followed all the instructions carefully. Then, I waited and waited. Nothing. I guess they rotted away (adding culinary flavour to the compost itself).
Well, it’s taken me a few years to recover from the rejection and I’m feeling extremely confident this time. I even decided to break a few rules. I couldn’t wait for the shortest day and planted them a week earlier. I planted some separate cloves and then chucked in whole clumps of the garlic as well. I put grass clippings over the lot. Then I had some luck – it rained, and rained (it is the wet Waikato, of course). I worried a little that the bulbs would rot again but quietly hoped the white cloves would be swelling underground, soaking up all that natural water.
And, YES, I have spied some tiny green shoots.
I wouldn’t be without garlic in my kitchen. I know it helps prevent winter colds and it’s one of the few flavours I have always snuck into spaghetti bolognaise without my boys noticing – believe it! (I love it roasted too).
So, if you need to break some rules, plant some garlic now. It might be past the shortest day, but you might only need some grass clippings and fortuitous rain.
What can possibly go wrong now?

Hi Frankie,
I’ve grown them from a garlic bulb I bought at the supermarket a few years back now.
I didn’t follow any rules except planted them in the winter. Then in the summer, I think it was, and the leaves had died right down, I dug them up and they were large and tasty!
Lots of garlic butter for summer BBQ’s.
Good luck with your crop, I can’t imagine anything going wrong with them this time.
Gwen

I’m so jealous but you have made me feel a lot better. Maybe I just had a bit of bad luck the first time. Can’t believe you grew from a supermarket clove when they always say ‘not to’!

I started growing my own garlic last year and am thrilled with the results. I have found that I didnt actually get all out when I harvested and its great to see them already on the way for a second year. I also got some seeds from some plants which flowered and am eagerly watching to see what happens with them too.

I’ve grown my own garlic a few times & it was great – I’m not a good gardener. I have found a stall at our local market that sell organic garlic in different forms and now that’s what I buy. Can’t be without my garlic!!!

Hi Kiwisue. I hadn’t thought about letting some garlic go to seed – great idea. I’m going to try that as well. Let us know how yours get on.
